Heart of Adoptions, Inc prides itself in being an inclusive adoption agency. We proudly assist anyone including individuals who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender whether hoping to adopt as a couple or single parent.

Therefore, we’re excited to celebrate and support our LGBTQ birth parents, adoptees and adoptive families during Pride Month 2020 and create a bigger conversation around LGBTQ adoption.

What is Pride Month?

It’s when the world’s LGBTQ community comes together to celebrate their freedom to be themselves. Pride events and parades are hosted around the world and attended by anyone who feels their sexual identity is outside the mainstream, along with straight allies.

What is LGBTQ?

LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer. The umbrella term, “queer,” signifies, non-straight people in general and can include, gender-fluid, intersex and asexual people.

The acronym may also be extended to LGBTQIA.

What is the History of Pride Month?

The first Pride marches were in June of 1970, however its origin began a year before.

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in NYC, was raided by police who hauled customers outside. As tensions escalated, patrons began to resist arrest and a growing crowd of bystanders began to throw objects at the police. NYC’s gay community, who had endured years of harassment at the hands of police, were fed up and riots broke out in the neighborhood for three days.

The riots ended up becoming a catalyst for the Gay Rights Movement, which was modeled on the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights Movements. There were protests, political discussions and sit-ins. And then, in June of 1970, there was the first Gay Pride Parade.

Are LGBTQ Couples Able To Adopt?

Yes! While the Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell v. Hodges ruling in 2015 brought Marriage Equality to all 50 states, it did not specifically address foster care or adoption – meaning that it was still up to the states to decide. As of 2020, every state allows for LGBTQ adoption, whether you’re adopting as a couple or as an individual.
